Greenball lights up

Dan, Zef, Chris and Zac all got some beauties at Greenball this morning. Zef "got nailed" before he came in, and there were a few cleanup sets around. Dan thought it was a bit sectiony when he first arrived but was really pleased with the wave quality when he got out there. He's nursing some cuts to his foot from the coral but had an excellent time. Dave didn't even pack a board so he wasn't tempted to re-injure his healing rib!

While it was cold and wet in Taiwan for the majority of the week...........

Big Gazza scored some pumping sessions in Bali over the break. Serangan had good surf every day with some days really amped up. He grabbed the camera to take a few shots after one session (above) and reports that his old body just managed to hold together throughout!

WOW! What a day. Dan drove Zef, Dave and Simon down to Nan Ao after an early morning start at 4.45. We were in the water at 7 and it was stellar. Powerful walls, crumbling takeoff before a steep drive into the bank and the best waves screamed down the line to ease out on the shoreline 100 metres away from the take off zone. Everyone had at least two sessions, wringing the most from the day. Dan was ripping on his Chili shortboard, Zef was showing surfing maturity beyond his years (and courage!) and Simon and Dave each got a slew of beauties to put in the memory bank. Dave appears to have injured a rib or two, injury occurring on the very first wave of the day... Update: just back from hospital, one fracture, no displacement, lot of muscle tear, but should "recover quickly"...righto Doc, I'll hold you to that!

Well, the second great south and east coast road trip was another resounding success. Jialeshui pumped as described in the last post and it was a balmy 25 degrees and sunny. The east coast drive was peppered with punchy left hand point breaks, all the way from the "loads of potential" Dawu, through to Sansiantai (Chenggong), which just needed another foot of swell to take the very sharp coral out of the equation. Undeterred and traveling on, Donghe had size but was blown. Bashien was a stellar find, see video above or here, although the takeoff looking straight into a boulder lined shore was heart-in-the-mouth stuff! Again deserted, it was pumping with power the whole time. To top it off on the way home, Nan Ao was at its most intimidating, breaking heavy and close to shore. Jialushui was pumping today, with a machine-like 4 foot swell pulsing in all day and the odd 6 foot set: wild! My phone is playing up, so no photos for a few days. 5 hours surfing today, arms like jelly...I'm off for a nap!

The Pilly was windswept, but like always, every now and then they'd be a swing to cross-shore and a few nice little faces would open up. The rip was working overtime and so was the paddling! Not sensational, but a few satisfying little waves were had.

Every spot from the Pilly to the Rocket was either flat or blown out mush. Dan, Chris and Zef reported Green Bay to be messy, so the Rocket it was for them and Dave. We couldn't believe this was it for the weekend typhoon swell: either bad locations, bad timing or both. Anyway, a touch of fun was had at the Rocket. Aaron reported that an over zealous coastguard had closed Baishawan earlier in the morning...it was flat when Dave drove past. Another ominous sign of possible things to come: the Pillbox has been "beautified" with a coastal walk so more people will see it now: hopefully the ever-present pig farm stink will continue to keep them away!

Typhoon approaches, but the north coast just got a pass mark today. Cliffs was the best of them, slight offshore, bigger sets had a bit of juice. Dave got a few. Simon reported Wushi as nice and hollow, probably the better bet. According to her facebook page, the girl from Surfella was busy battening down the hatches in anticipation of the big blow, so no photos from her today.

The weekend before last was cranking. Dan took these shots on his phone. There were numerous spots from Pointies (top photo) to Green Ball that were surfable. Green Ball itself, strangely, was flat. Last weekend provided that usual Taiwanese flipside to this swell....flat again!

Winter/Summer break.....we're back!

Dave got some great swell on the way up to the tow-in monsters and also in swell scaling down for the week after it hit. Merewether was really cranking most of the winter. Dan was a bit disappointed with his trip to South Africa from a surf perspective: J-Bay just didn't turn it on while he was there. Haven't caught up with the other surfers yet, but I will. Send me any stories, pics, for posting...

Typhoon aftermath

This is, of course Shipstern's Bluff, not Taiwan, but back to that later.

Dan and Simon both got amongst the waves at Green Ball in a dying typhoon swell, but were joined by a whole phalanx of other surfers. The water was pushing across the reef at an unusual angle, conditions not at their optimum. Many longboarders meant a few different takeoff zones, and not all the guys were able to move in and out of the waves skilfully, meaning some pretty heavy congestion. All the other spots around seemed pretty much blown, except perhaps for southern Wushi gang.

Dave, Dan and Zef made the most of the swell on a fast bank, Evie and Nicky had a good time on shore and even Sheena found a friend to run round in circles with!

While our man Robbo goes in search of Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz (more on this when he returns in a week or so), there are others finding surfing gold back in Australia. Here, Taswegians Jy Johannesson and Ethan Wilson decided to jump on their pushies and take a trip through an undisclosed national park in their chosen southern state. 3-4 foot peaks were found, ripped and then left alone, like no-one was ever there. Pointyhats hit Singapore!

Dave and Wal had a great weekend in Singapore. Golf, races, beers etc. but the highlight was catching up with Singaporean Pointyhat members, Josh, Lewy and Clarky. It was a rollickin' weekend even though a bit of a haze at times!
Clarky had some great stories of his trip last week to Shipwrecks: he got some classic conditions, edgy and exciting, offshore and clear, juicing up loads of adrenalin with a bunch of mates. He still had a big smile on his face this weekend, so it was an epic session.

Packing a punch: in both hemispheres

The biggest wave ever recorded powered through Tasmanian waters yesterday at a crazy 18.4 metres (yes, metres, not feet!). The same swell is predicted to produce a monster surf in Sydney this weekend. The photo shows Manly this morning as it builds.

Of course, Taiwan itself will also feel some power this weekend, but we'll wait and see if we can get out past the coast guard somewhere as Typhoon Fanapi rumbles across. The east coast was certainly building in strength this morning...

and I just love this shot. The girls are certainly showing the guys how it's done over there...

Pointies was dead flat and had a clubbies carnival about to start. Jinshan number 2 had big fatties out the back pushing onto a bank about 1 foot deep. Dave cracked a stack of fast little barrels and ate a lot of sand! Great fun, a little 1 1/2 hour window before it all filled up again...
