Thanks for Greenies

Greenball was the call from Danno last evening, so we were all in the water before 6a.m.! It was pretty solid, the current strongly sweeping towards Baishawan and the sets had a fair bit of power and reasonable size. As always, the faces were smoothed off, an easy takeoff then some fast sections. Dave was a bit rusty but managed to enjoy himself and the Robinson trio of Dan, Zef and visiting brother John all got some beauties. As always a few scrapes and bumps were had getting out!! (The last shot is of a deserted Pillbox which Dave checked on the way home: it's still doing it's thing even though the tide was not ideal) Check video of Greenies here.

Shark Shock

Dan L. reports that they caught a large great white shark somewhere off Ilan last weekend. This is the first time he's ever heard of something like this. I have a hazy memory of reading something like this about 5 years back....
Here's a link to the story
Taiwan banned shark finning last year and this might be a sign that the ocean ecology is improving. I'm all for that, just hope that big boppas like this one stay away from me!

What?!

Yes, I know......I've actually got out to the coast!! Gazza went to see "Chasing Mavericks" on Friday night and after I saw him in the corridor and Dan on Friday night and told them how long it had been, well.........I just had to get out!

Suffice to say, I picked the most wind-swept awful day to renegotiate the mountain road. The boys at Pointies (top pic) were just floating around and the crew at The Cliff did calisthenics for at least 10 minutes....looked like they didn't want a part of it!

Fifty (yes, 50!) tour wins.

A valiant and carving Parko could do nothing to stop the amazing Kelly Slater's 50th tour title.

wooo!

Danno about to get nicely shacked at Jinshan. Looks like there were some non-halcyon days at Jinshan from August 4 through to August 8, nice swell lines and size with some offshore winds. Photo courtesy of 波管工廠

We're back!

Dave and Ross caught a few at the isolated spot known as Bluetops on the south coast of NZ down from Dunedin. Newcastle also had its fair share of pumping swell over the break and some good waves were to be had on the shoulders of the swell window. Gary reports rare overhead barrels in front of his place in Queensland. How did everyone else fare? Let me know...

Taiwan or elsewhere?

Wherever you are in the next couple of months, stay safe and hopefully get a wave or three. I'm looking forward to some Merewether time with friends, hopefully we'll get a little swell from time to time. I'm determined to make a better effort of keeping "Pointyhat" more up-to-date and relevant when I get back, so to that end, take a few shots that you'd be willing to share on here. I also want one of our favourite segments, Pointy of the Month, to make a comeback. There are a few people who need an entry and then we might even have a second round(!). Have fun, see you back mid August!

overhead Baisha!

Tobes and Aaron got some good juice at Baishawan this morning. Tobes was still as amped as a kid in a lolly shop later this afternoon! Will they go back for more in the morning???

Slop to Silk

Typical sloppy carnage on Saturday (top), but Sunday cleaned up to throw up a few nice offshore peaks over at Wushi.
Looked like it was pretty nice....    (thanks Surfella for the photos)

Smooth and languid

A few small, smooth lines push through at Wushi Gang this morning (thanks Surfella for photo)

The King Is Dead

The King of Kirra, the man who defeated the legendary MR in his prime, the star of Albie's "Morning of the Earth", surfing's soul guru is dead. Thanks for the memories, MP.

How good are professional surfers?!

The current crop of men and women on the pro circuit continue to display almost super-human skill. Surfest, at Merewether (Dave's home break) is serving up only very average waves at the moment, but the maneuvers have to be seen to be believed. Check it out here. Bells is soon!

Newcastle's SURFEST now on!

NEWCASTLE, NSW/Australia (Wednesday, March 14, 2012) – Merewether once again played host to an array of the world’s best surfers as the ASP 6-Star Burton Toyota Pro hit the water for the Round of 96, the Round that sees the top seeds enter the draw. The surf was in the 2 to 3 foot (1 – 1.5 meter) range with some nice walls and rippable sections on offer. Check it here

Greenball lights up

Dan, Zef, Chris and Zac all got some beauties at Greenball this morning. Zef "got nailed" before he came in, and there were a few cleanup sets around. Dan thought it was a bit sectiony when he first arrived but was really pleased with the wave quality when he got out there. He's nursing some cuts to his foot from the coral but had an excellent time. Dave didn't even pack a board so he wasn't tempted to re-injure his healing rib!

While cold and wet in Taiwan,.....Bali was different!

While it was cold and wet in Taiwan for the majority of the week...........
Big Gazza scored some pumping sessions in Bali over the break. Serangan had good surf every day with some days really amped up. He grabbed the camera to take a few shots after one session (above) and reports that his old body just managed to hold together throughout!

Nan Ao t of this world!

WOW! What a day. Dan drove Zef, Dave and Simon down to Nan Ao after an early morning start at 4.45. We were in the water at 7 and it was stellar. Powerful walls, crumbling takeoff before a steep drive into the bank and the best waves screamed down the line to ease out on the shoreline 100 metres away from the take off zone. Everyone had at least two sessions, wringing the most from the day. Dan was ripping on his Chili shortboard, Zef was showing surfing maturity beyond his years (and courage!) and Simon and Dave each got a slew of beauties to put in the memory bank. Dave appears to have injured a rib or two, injury occurring on the very first wave of the day... Update: just back from hospital, one fracture, no displacement, lot of muscle tear, but should "recover quickly"...righto Doc, I'll hold you to that!
